Back in 2006, the USS CORSAIR embarked on its journey, and its inaugural meeting took place at the Sonic on O'Neil in Baton Rouge, amidst the swatting of mosquitoes and the sipping of drinks. During this gathering, the ambitious crew made plans to revive a STARFLEET chapter in the Baton Rouge area, as the previous chapter, the USS KIDD, had been decommissioned in the late 1990s, and interest had waned since then.
Using the futuristic tool known as Star Trek Meetup, the early command staff began organizing events and engaging with other enthusiastic Star Trek fans, all while boldly going where no one had gone before. Starting with potlucks and viewing parties, the chapter gained momentum as more members joined STARFLEET, leading to the election of a Commanding Officer to navigate the chapter through the Shakedown process, which is essentially the probationary period for a new chapter. The Regional Flagship, the Aurora Vulcanus, graciously agreed to sponsor the budding Baton Rouge Chapter, and Fleet Captain Trisha Tunis was chosen as the Commanding Officer, a title she still holds to this day, as the 'CO' of the USS CORSAIR. In due course, Edward C. Tunis III took on the responsibilities of Executive Officer, bringing his own flair to the intergalactic table.
To add a touch of whimsy, a list of potential names was presented to the crew for a vote, with options including USS KINGFISH and USS LAFITTE/LAFFITE, alongside the winning option, USS CORSAIR. And thus, after much deliberation and perhaps a few interstellar debates, the USS CORSAIR emerged victorious in the vote, cementing its place in the galaxy with a resounding 'Engage!'
our Mission
The crew of the USS Corsair, affectionately known as the "Red Shirts," truly embodies a spirit of service. This dedication shines brightly in our philanthropic efforts, showcasing our commitment to making a positive impact in the community. Each member actively engages in volunteer work, contributing their time and energy to local churches, libraries, and civic organizations.
Together, we also rally around various charitable causes, lending our support to organizations that make a difference in people's lives. Our collective efforts benefit notable charities such as the American Cancer Society, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. We also extend our hands to help local animal shelters like Cat Haven and the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society, as well as food banks like Second Harvest and community parks through BREC.
The passion for service among the Red Shirts is not just a duty; it’s a way of life. We take pride in our ability to come together as a team to support these important causes, fostering a sense of community and compassion. Through our volunteer work, we aim to inspire others to join us in making a difference, proving that even small acts of kindness can lead to significant change.
